    Japanese Madness

This is proof that Japanese game developers are nuts...

From an extract of an article from the-magicbox.com

Kazunori Yamauchi revealed new tidbits of Gran Turismo 5 for PS3:
  • Gran Turismo 5 will be released in Christmas 2008
  • It takes 6 months to design a car and one year to design a full race track. Currently 30 staffs are working on race tracks
  • Gran Turismo Portable for PSP is intended to connect with GT5
  • Yamauchi only stayed home four days since he started working in the Gran Turismo series 15 years ago
  • There were only 15 staffs when Gran Turismo 1 started, today there are 120 people in Polyphony Digital
  • Both Ferrari and Suzuka will be in GT5, they will look exactly like the real thing
  • He would be frustrated if working with Wii because he knows PS3 is a much more powerful console
  • He thinks Xbox 360 is not a Full HD console, because not a lot of games are running in 1080p at 60fps
  • Yamauchi wants to work on a lengthy RPG
  • Damage model is still around, but probably with compromises due to agreements with manufacturers
  • Some manufacturers prohibit damage models for their vehicles, so at the end some vehicles will not have damage models

  • "Yamauchi only stayed home four days since he started working in the Gran Turismo series 15 years ago"

    WTF.

Japanese are nuts. The guy probably watches porn, masturbates and has sex in the office as well. X_X

    The Allure of Final Fantasy

I have recently started replaying Final Fantasy 9 (the Final Fantasy for Traditionalists) and I began thinking about the allure of the Final Fantasy series...

The Final Fantasy series is wildly popular, famous for it's high production values, cutting edge graphics, attractive character designs, etc. Players also enjoy a level of familiarity when playing a Final Fantasy title (Chocobos, Crystals, Saving the World, etc).

However, I believe that the Final Fantasy series managed to achieve this level of success due to one overriding factor - Adventure.

The later iterations of the Final Fantasy series has always given the player a very compelling adventure for the player to immerse themselves into. As technology improved, the game designers were able to heighten the sense of adventure through better graphics, sound, interactivity, etc.

While occidental RPGs focused on allowing players to forge their own destinies, through the use of sandbox design and dialogue trees. Squaresoft focused on improving player immersion. Square became the equivalent of the modern day storyteller, allowing players to enter into an epic tale of their choosing.

Post Final Fantasy 6, with improved graphics, the Final Fantasy series has acquired many similarities to graphic adventure games. Allowing scenario writers to tell convincing stories visually without worrying about polygon counts and other hardware limitations.

I would be so bold as to define the allure of Final Fantasy as a fusion of the Adventure and RPG genre.

    Here's the pitch...

I read an interesting article on gamespot about the trials and tribulations of getting game ideas turned into games, as dissected by David Jaffe, Ron Gilbert, Lorne Lanning, Will Wright, and more.

Notable quotes from the list of luminaries

    Will Wright, on Sim City:
They kept saying, 'Where's the ending? When do you win or lose?' And they wanted to have an election where you got kicked out of office or not. And I was like, 'No, it's even more fun if you're doing it badly.' And they just parked it. They decided they weren't going to release it.

    David Jaffe, on demos:
We could have hacked something together, but we would have been saying, 'This is placeholder, that's placeholder, but you get the idea.' Nowadays, you can't be sure who understands [the concept of] work-in-progress or not. If they just grade it on face value, it better knock their socks off. Otherwise they'll send you packing.

    Ron Gilbert, on publishers:
"The bigger the publisher, the more I would emphasize why it's going to be successful and why it's targeting successful segments of the market," Gilbert said. "With smaller publishers, I go more into what's going to be different and unique about it. They tend to be more interested in those things because they're trying to stand out a little more than the big publishers.

But my favorite quote has to be from David Jaffe, on God of War:
"There's a real desire among the powers that be at Sony that innovation is important. I'm just not that kind of designer. I don't care about innovation, I care about entertainment. The feedback I was getting is that this game isn't innovative. I was like so what? I wasn't a jerk about it, but wouldn't you rather have a game that entertains the crap out of people rather than one that checks off the tick box saying it's innovative?"

    Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu

    The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

The official Haruhi.tv website was replaced by a fake 404 error a couple of weeks back.

After entering the code K N S A K, the user is presented with a DOS prompt running Yuki's escape program. The program reads:

By the time you are reading this, I am probably no longer myself.

Since this message is being displayed, it means that you, me, Haruhi Suzumiya, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi exist in that world.

That is the key. You have found the answer.

This is an emergency escape program. Press the Enter key to activate it, or press any other key to abort. If activated, you will receive a chance to repair the space-time continuum. However, I cannot guarantee that it will succeed. Neither can I guarantee your return.

Ready?
This program can only be activated once. It will be deleted immediately upon execution. If you choose to abort, the program will be deleted without being executed. Ready?

    Duke Nukem Cometh

It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum...

and i'm all out of gum...

"Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming...
... Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience. I'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John)."

    - George Broussard, 3D Realms

Duke Nukem Forever has been announced by 3DRealms. I, for one, believe that the game will actually be released this time, since 3D Realms managed to ressurrect Prey from their vaporware library last year.

The question is: Would Duke Nukem Forever be an inspiration for birth control?

    Pa-Pa-Patapon!

Patapon (PSP) looks very interesting! The game is from the same developers as LocoRoco (Pyramid/Interlink).

The player controls an army of miniature creatures called Patapons. In a distinct gameplay twist, action and rhythm are by utilizing drumbeats to command their army to march, attack, and defend, ultimately leading the Patapon tribe to victory.

    Fight Night Round 3 Training

I've been playing Fight Night Round 3 (PSP) for quite a bit these days. Although, the game is a very well produced and entertaining game, the Training system in the Career mode has a major design flaw.

The training system allows players to specify if their player character (PC)is to have a Normal , Confident or Aggressive intensity of training. Normal intensity training results in the smallest benefits and has the lowest injury rate, while Aggressive intensity has the largest benefits and the highest injury rate.

The problem with this system is that it does not keep a memory of past trainings and the percentage chance of injury does not increase after training aggressively multiple times in a row. From my discernment, there is no strategy to the training, except, "choose your intensity and hope for the best". This results in the player (me) reloading the game whenever i get injuried from an aggressive intensity training. I do not see the use of training at the other intensities.

In real life, a sportsman has to manage the intensity of her trainings from match to match in order to deliver the best performance before a big match.

    How I would design it:

I would propose the implementation of a fatigue system.

If fatigue levels cross a certain endurance threshold, the chance of injury during training increases significantly. The more intense the training the faster the buildup of fatigue.

The endurance threshold of the PC is determined by one of the PC's character statistics (endurance?).

Therefore, the player has to strategize by managing the fatigue levels to the optimium performance gains. A combination of Normal, Confident and Aggressive training regiments will then need to be used.

I have had a growing interest in reading a chinese/english parallel bible.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
